I spent the rest of yesterday watching movies. The more complicated, the better, so I wouldn’t have to think about Benny. Or Kade. The first made me feel sad. The second made me feel confused.

Kade was especially nice to me yesterday. I knew it was because I’d just lost my dog, but he had gone above and beyond, and I wasn’t sure why.

I was shocked to learn he had 20 acres of land and was building a house. I usually covered my ears if someone talked about him, and my friends stopped mentioning him around me. So, I guess I hadn’t earned the right to know what he’d been doing with his life.

Thinking way back, I remembered Kade telling me he wanted to build a house someday. He loved to work with his hands, loved the smell of lumber, and was learning construction by working part-time with a crew in the summers when he wasn’t working at his dad’s hardware store.

One high school memory in particular came to mind. We’d been tossing the football to each other, just messing around. Kade would throw it to me and then follow the ball to fake-tackle me. Man, how I loved it when he wrapped his arms around me and kissed me silly. Not that I had any experience with that other than with him. But he was all I wanted, and I was so in love with him.

After tiring ourselves out throwing the ball, we sat under a shade tree. Kade leaned against the trunk, and I leaned against his chest.

“What do you want to do after school?” he’d ask.

“I have no clue. I suppose I want a job that uses my brain.”

“Ah. That brain. I love that brain,” he said from behind me, his voice all breathy. He moved my ponytail and kissed my neck.

“What about you?” I asked.

“I’m going to take over my dad’s store and build myself a house.”

“And then have a wife and lots of kids and live happily ever after?” I half-teased.

“Absolutely. That’s my plan. Although the wife comes before the house. She’s more important.” And then he squeezed me long and hard, and with a thrill deep in my bones, I knew without a doubt that wife would be me.

But along the way, reality happened. Condoms ripped, a heart got broken, dreams changed, and people grew up. So that was that.

I thought about the beautiful property he showed me yesterday. I liked living right in town, but an area like that would make living in the outskirts totally worth it. Besides, it wasn’t that far away. It surprised me how drawn I was to his house plans and his dream. It scared me. I jumped up and stretched. I didn’t want to go any further down this train of thought, so I shut it down, along with my laptop.

I was done with work for the day, and I’d been done with Kade for a long time now. It wasn’t good to bring up the good old days.
